Now, for the first time, Bernard Sumner gives you chapter and verse. Others have told parts of the story, in film and book form. Sometimes moving, often hilarious, and occasionally completely out of control, this is a tale populated by some of the most colorful and creative characters in music history, such as Ian Curtis, Tony Wilson, Rob Gretton, and Martin Hannett. Sumner describes the formation of New Order, takes us behind the scenes at the birth of classics such as “Blue Monday,” and gives his firsthand account of the ecstasy and the agony of the Haçienda days. Īn integral part of the Manchester, UK, music scene since the late 1970s, his is the definitive version of the events that created two of the most influential bands of all time.Ĭhapter and Verse includes a vivid and illuminating account of Bernard Sumner’s childhood, the early days of Joy Division, the band’s enormous critical and popular success, and the subsequent tragic death of Ian Curtis. Chapter and Verse - New Order, Joy Division and Me. This afternoon, I finally got into Bernard Sumner’s memoir Chapter and Verse: New Order, Joy Division and Me. Actually, I obviously flicked through it when it showed up, looking at the glossy pictures, dabbling here and there (somehow read not one but two anecdotes about Seal (?)), and then reading the book’s first appendix, a transcript of a recording of Sumner’s hypnotizing Ian Curtis (excuse that mangled clause).

When inspecting her land one day, she found a young man from the Kikuyu tribe whose leg had been crushed under a felled tree. “Barua a Soldani” means “letter from a King.” It is a story about a letter Karen Blixen received from Danish King Christian X as thanks for a lion-skin she had sent him. But there was so much more to one of Kenya’s most famous authors than ‘Out of Africa’.Īs part of our women’s month celebration, we looked into the life and work of this fascinating woman, and found so much more than a wealthy baroness who had a love affair with (and in) Africa. This is probably the first thing most people think about when they hear the name Karen Blixen. “I had a farm in Africa, at the foot of the Ngong Hills.” WORDS by KATARINA MANCAMA | IMAGES SUPPLIED by CHRISTIE FYNN MORGAN To the mystery, not the subplot? - 30% Murder of certain profession? - prostitutes/stripper/porn Misc. Many of us see the end product of a person who has excelled and decide that we want what they have too. When a decision is made it means a formal conclusion has been drawn after consideration. Let’s take a look at what it means to decide. Sounds exhausting right? This is why excelling is so hard. If we want to excel in doing anything, we have to overcome our natural tendencies to be lazy and comfortable and we have to consciously decide, not just once, but over and over again to do more work than is necessary for survival. Unfortunately, this wiring is still prominent and leads most of us to do far less than we’re capable of doing. These were critical adaptations that were made over the course of our existence as humans that kept us alive during harsh periods of existence.įortunately, for most of us today, we don’t have to worry about how or when we’ll get our next meal-food is, for the most part, readily available. We’re wired to conserve energy-both by expending less (moving less) and storing more (fat on your body)-so that we don’t starve to death if we can’t get more food. Why wouldn’t that be the case? Naturally, we are lazy creatures. The path of least resistance is the path most people decide to follow. Introduction: So, You Want To Be A Badass?Įxcelling is optional. Vanessa challenges Jax like no one has before and her fiery attitude intrigues him to want to spend more time with her. Jax and Vanessa’s first meeting at airport was not a very positive one. Vanessa has always had a wall around her heart and by creating her seven rules to live by she avoids any signs of heartbreak. Jax Maris is Lucy’s very protective, loving, older brother who practically raised her after a tragic incident involving their parents. She has never had a serious relationship, trying to keep all men at arm’s length. Major props to you Gina Maxwell on another job well done! I can’t wait to read more of your work! This story is about Vanessa MacGregor (Lucie’s best friend) who is the firecracker, independent, always in control, and very vocal about everything. The banter that goes on between Jax and Vanessa was quite amusing. So of course, I instantly fell in love with Jax. I fell in love with Reid and Lucy in her first book, Seducing Cinderella. In Matthew Atkinson's personage, Tommy Boy has wanted Hope so badly that he kept secrets, let someone die, partook in kidnapping, faked a death, terrorized a child, and tried a gaslight wedding to someone else. Just eww!īut Ridge has nothing on his son, who has been coveting his most-of-the-time stepsister for over a decade, except when Pierson Fodé was playing him Hope was off the canvas at the time. It didn't matter that Eric turned out to be Bridget's father but not Ridge's. Somewhere along the line, however, pseudo-incestuous almost-pairings were added to this definition of "bold" - starting with Ridge making goo-goo eyes at I-thought-she-was-my-daughter Bridget in 2003. If Steffy could do it, apparently, it was all right for brother Thomas, too.Īs implied by its title, this soap started off with beautiful people doing bold things. But "Hot," or Thope, came to us hot off the icky heels of the Rick/Steffy pairing. It was one thing for Brooke to bounce between brothers, or Nick to bounce between sisters. B&B has basically been teasing out the idea of a Hope/Thomas pairing since early 2012. In any case, if you’ve gotten this far with the audiobooks, do not hesitate to pick up Wolf Bane. A small, selfish part of me would have liked to see the writing style mature as its audience has, but the thought of new young readers discovering and devouring all 9 books is too enchanting. There is no question these are the characters we knew all those years ago, and any simplicity or repetitiveness inherent to YA writing (which we may have more readily excused in youth) is camouflaged by Sir Ian’s masterful vocal colour. I haven’t read the physical books, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Sir Ian McKellen’s voice and performance is in large part responsible for this continuity of feeling. Happily, I can report that Michelle Paver has more than reignited the prehistoric bright-beast-that-bites-hot inside me it was a pure joy to return to Torak’s world. There’s always a chance revisiting a beloved world will taint the remembered magic. I finished the 6th (and at the time final) audiobook in the series when I was a teenager, so as an adult I was as apprehensive as I was delighted to learn there’d be an entire sequel trilogy. I also liked that she isn’t a petty shallow character, but is a girl who is already thinking for herself before the crisis happens. She is an amazingly well developed character and I found her to have a unique voice that immediately pulls you into the story. Her characters are engaging and believable. I felt like I was walking outside in the bitter colds of the arctic. Pike has a very lush and dynamic language that made it very easy to escape into her story, specifically when describing the cold. However all of this is only the beginning of “strange new occurrences” for Tavia and before long she and Benson, her library boy, are fleeing from her aunt and uncle. Things are starting to go back to normal – whatever that is – until Tavia starting seeing a mystery boy who is dressed in clothes dating back to the 1800?s. On the plus side, she met a cute boy at the library who seems to be the only one pulling her out of her haze of grief and recovery. She lost both of her parents and is now just trying to piece her life back together. Tavia is hiding-out with her aunt and uncle after being the only survivor of plane crash. Aprilynne Pike’s latest novel Earthbound is a fantastic beginning to what is sure to be a great series. The best way I know how to calm myself on an airplane is to get so engrossed in a book, that I forget we’re flying. Meltingpot loves to travel but HATES to fly and when I say hate, I really mean flying induces major panic and anxiety in me. I wasn’t in the mood to be depressed, but I was about to endure a two-hour plane ride to Wisconsin and I needed a distraction. I promised myself I’d pick the book up again when I was more in the mood for a heavy read.įlash forward to last week. All I know is that when I got the book, I started reading it and then put it down because I was sure it would leave me morose and depressed and I didn’t want to be in that place at the beginning of the new year. This #diversebook book will haunt you for days…but in a good way.Truth be told, I think I received this book as a Christmas present. This book, if I may paraphrase Drake, has got me all in my feelings. I have to tell you about Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward.
